Frequently Asked Questions

TINCTURE MAKING

What is a tincture?

A tincture is a concentrated extract made by soaking herbs, berries, roots, or barks from one or more plants in a liquid(usually alcohol or glycerin) for several weeks.  The alcohol or glycerin pulls out the active compounds from the plants, concentrating them as a liquid.  The liquid is strained and considered a tincture.

Should I use glycerin or alcohol for my tincture?

Usually alcohol is the most effective substance for extracting herbs.  It results in a more potent tincture.  The glycerin doesn't extract as well, but tastes better.  The most popular choice is to combine the alcohol and glycerin resulting in an effective tincture that is easily ingested.  The alcohol also helps preserve the extract by preventing herb breakdown and bacterial growth.

What if I forget, and leave my herbs soaking longer than instructions say to?

It is ok for herbs to soak for longer than the amount of time specified in the directions.

USAGE

Is it safe to give tinctures with alcohol to children?

Alcohol is safe in small amounts.  A dropper is equal to about 1/6 teaspoon.  Adjust doses accordingly for small children.  The glycohol tinctures (glycerin and alcohol) work well with children.  It is generally recommended to not use alcohol based tinctures for newborns.

How much is a dropper dose?

When the dropper bulb is squeezed, the amount of tincture pulled into the tube is considered 1 dropper full.  The tube will not be full.  One dropper = 1/6 teaspoon.  One dropper = 30-40 drops.

Is it safe to take tinctures when I'm pregnant or nursing?

Very few herbs have been proven safe during pregnancy.  It is usually best to limit to gentle "food" herbs during pregnancy, like nettle, raspberry leaf, alfalfa, etc.  Please seek advice from your primary healthcare provider regarding the use of herbs during pregnancy.
